PON Steering Committee Chair Robert Mnookin delivered this year's keynote address at the University of Massachusetts-Boston's Conflict Studies Conference, "The New Generation of Ideas." The conference organizers selected Mnookin because of his proven record as a "leading scholar in the field of conflict resolution" and his ability to apply an "interdisciplinary approach to negotiation and conflict resolution to a remarkable range of problems, both public and private."

Managing Director Susan Hackley also represented PON at the conference, moderating a session entitled "Talk and Social Conflict."

The Graduate Programs in Dispute Resolution at UMass-Boston hosted the 2002 Conflict Studies Conference from October 24-26.

The Conflict Studies Conference is designed for graduate students of conflict resolution and related fields to present their work, interact with eminent scholars in conflict studies and build community within the field.

The conference began on October 24 with skills-building workshops on issues such as "Human Rights and Conflict Resolution," and "Shifts Happen: Moving from Automatic to Intentional Dialogue on Divisive Issues," an experiential workshop about the dialogic approach of the Public Conversations Project. After several sessions on various aspects of conflict resolution, the conference ended with a career expo on Saturday morning.
