About the talk:
Professor Amy J. Schmitz will share insights from her book, The Arbitration Conversation, which features interviews with over 120 dispute resolution experts. The book highlights the evolution of arbitration in the digital age, examines online arbitration (OArb) as a cost-effective alternative, and discusses the roles of AI, the metaverse, and blockchain in arbitration.
Additionally, she will discuss the JusticeTech Program and Capstone Practicum at the Ohio State Moritz College of Law, which aims to bridge the gap between law and technology to improve access to justice. In partnership with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and community organizations, the program empowers students to create legal technologies that address community needs and promote ethical AI use.
About the Speaker:
Amy J. Schmitz holds the John Deaver Drinko-Baker & Hostetler Endowed Chair in Law at Moritz College of Law and co-directs the Responsible Data Science Community of Practice at the Translational Data Analytics Institute. She directs the JusticeTech Capstone and Fellowship Program and teaches courses on arbitration, contracts, online dispute resolution (ODR), and AI in law.
A distinguished scholar, Schmitz has authored over 90 articles and delivered more than 180 presentations. She researches AI and dispute resolution at the Cyberjustice Laboratory in Montreal and has co-authored several books, including Resolving Disputes: Theory, Practice, and Law and The Arbitration Conversation. She also hosts the podcast “The Arbitration Conversation,” featuring over 100 webisodes.
Before joining Ohio State, Schmitz taught at the University of Missouri and the University of Colorado. She clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and practiced law in Seattle and Minneapolis, specializing in arbitration.
Schmitz is a Fulbright Specialist in arbitration and ODR and has received multiple awards, including the Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (CPR) Book Award for 2023 and 2025. She is an elected member of the American Law Institute and received the 2023 Association of American Law Schools Technology, Law, and Legal Education Section Award.
