About the book:
Have you logged into Facebook recently? Searched for something on Google? Chosen a movie on Netflix? If so, you’ve probably been an unwitting participant in a variety of experiments (aka randomized controlled trials) designed to test the impact of different online experiences. Once an esoteric tool for academic research, experiments have gone mainstream – and are increasingly used to guide decision making in government and business alike. Within government, there has been a rise of behaviorally informed experiments aimed at helping to develop and achieve policy goals ranging from improving education to reducing tax delinquency rates. Within business, experiments are used in a variety of areas ranging from evaluating marketing options to guiding decisions about whether to offer remote work. Tech companies run experiments at an especially impressive scale, testing new products and features, marketing campaigns, and approaches to questions around employee management.
In The Power of Experiments, Michael Luca and Max Bazerman explore the value of experiments for decision making in a data-driven world – and lay out a path to help organizations better leverage experiments to guide managerial and policy decisions.
About the speakers:
Michael Luca is a professor at Harvard Business School whose research, teaching, and advisory work focuses on the design of online platforms, and on the ways in which data can guide managerial and policy decisions.
At Harvard, Luca launched a new MBA course on using experiments to guide managerial decisions, called From Data to Decisions: Leveraging Experiments for Effective Strategy, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. He has also taught and developed materials for executive education and MBA courses on platform design, behavioral economics, and business analytics. Luca serves on the board of directors at the National Association of Business Economics, the academic advisory board of the Behavioural Insights Team, and the advisory board of the CNBC Technology Executive Council, and is a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Max H. Bazerman is the Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School.
